Anyone can learn music: 26-year-old music instructor empowers other persons with disabilities

Mr. Syafiq, a music instructor with Faith Music Centre, is supported to work with students of diverse needs.

“Don't judge a book by its cover, because anyone, disabled or not, can learn music,” Mr. Muhammad Syafiq Bin Mohamed Yusoff said.

The 26-year-old started with the Band Mentorship Program under Faith Music Centre, supported by SG Enable, where he learnt to play various musical instruments and was deployed to Fire Rainbow Band, one of Faith Music Centre’s inclusive bands. The band has been engaged for various corporate, social and public performances.

Faith Music Centre receives support from the Enabling Employment Credit (EEC) Scheme, which provides wage offsets to employers of persons with disabilities.

This gives Faith Music Centre a boost in upskilling staff and instructors to better support students with diverse needs. Training covers both practical and interpersonal skills, like supporting wheelchair users, guiding people with visual impairment, and communicating effectively with persons with hearing impairment.

These opportunities allow instructors to continue creating an inclusive learning environment where persons with disabilities like Mr. Syafiq can thrive.

Mr Alvin Yeo, founder of Faith Music Centre said: “We have always believed in giving persons with disabilities an opportunity to shine in their jobs. The EEC is really just an additional push for us to support persons with disabilities and give them additional help.”
