From job loss to new purpose: rediscovering meaningful job opportunities after a setback

Under the SkillsFuture Jobseeker Support (JS) scheme, Mr. Fajar received temporary financial support while actively seeking employment.

Despite being disheartened after getting laid off from his job, Mr. Fajar Shah Bin Salim took it in his stride, with the belief that “When one door closes, another may open.”

He turned to the JS scheme as he was looking for opportunities to push himself and go beyond his comfort zone.

As part of the scheme, Mr. Fajar was given access to career coaching workshops and resources to boost his chances of landing a new job.

Over the next few months, he attended a resume-building seminar, enrolled in a Diploma in IT infrastructure under SkillsFuture, and applied for jobs.

By taking active steps to upskill, reskill and apply for jobs under the JS scheme platforms, he collected points. These points allowed Mr Fajar to qualify for payouts, and support himself financially during this period.

Under the JS scheme, involuntarily unemployed jobseekers who are actively seeking employment can receive temporary financial support of up to $6,000 over six months.

After three months, Mr. Fajar secured a new role as a vocational instructor at APSN, where he trains young people with special needs for F&B operations. He is enthusiastic about this new role as it allows him to leverage his skillsets while giving back to the community.

“Don’t stop even if you are feeling lost,” he said. “At 45 this year, I haven't stopped chasing my dream of doing new things and adding value to my life and the lives of others.”
