After Mr. Gavin Fong was let go by his previous company, the Career Conversion Programme (CCP) helped to bridge his skills gap for a new role.
When Mr. Gavin Fong was let go by his company in 2024, he was anxious about whether he would be able to find another job, especially since his family was relying on him for financial support.
“When I thought about my family, it kept me going,” he said.
He eventually found a position with KLA Singapore and was subsequently enrolled in the Career Conversion Programme for Electronics.
CCPs help mid-career new hires or existing employees reskill into new roles with longer-term prospects, with salary support for employers.
Previously, Mr. Fong worked as a maintenance engineer, focusing on troubleshooting and preventive maintenance on pick-and-place inspection machines.
In his new role, he needed to work with lasers to build and calibrate machines. Despite the different job scope, he found the work was aligned with his interests as he was able to draw on what he learned as a student in manufacturing engineering during his polytechnic days.
To bridge the gap, he received structured on-the-job training for six months, which included studying for a licence to work with lasers safely and effectively. He was grateful to his supportive colleagues and supervisor who helped to prepare study notes.
Mr. Fong encourages those facing involuntary unemployment to keep an open mind: “Stay positive when trying to find a new job. Don’t be scared to try new things and step out of your comfort zone.”
