Help available for employees who are owed salaries
- Lianhe Zaobao, 25 January 2018

We refer to the letter "Who can I ask for help to recover my holiday job wages?" (Lianhe Zaobao, 18 Jan).

Under our law, employers are required to pay their employees on time. Salary must be paid within seven days from the end of each salary period during employment, or up to seven days from the last day of employment.

We understand that Mr Shen Kaiwen has received his salary before the publication of his letter. Notwithstanding, MOM is looking into the issues raised by Mr Shen. Employees who require assistance with owed salaries should approach the Tripartite Alliance for Dispute Management (TADM) early.

Letter: Whom can I ask for help to recover my holiday job wages?
- Lianhe Zaobao, 18 January 2018

Translated summary:

ZB carried a letter from Shen Kaiwen (沈凯文), who said that he worked for about 14 days at Umisushi during his school holidays last November. However, he has not received his wages even though he had left employment three weeks ago. He made several enquiries but to no avail. The store manager gave multiple excuses, such as how they had yet to submit his timesheet, or that the boss was not around to sign on the pay cheque. Hence, they were unable to mail the pay cheque to him. Shen found these excuses bewildering. His parents asked him to approach the relevant authorities and he asked who he could turn to for help.
