MOM will process FDW application as soon as proof of income is submitted
- The Straits Times, 10 January 2014

  1. We refer to Mr Hilarion Goh Seng Heng’s letter (“Unable to apply for a maid”; 6 January).
  2. We empathise with Mr Goh’s situation and would very much like to assist him in caring for his aged mother. At the same time, we have a responsibility in ensuring that any employer has the financial capacity to support the employment of a foreign domestic worker. This is why we ask for proof of income.
  3. In Mr Goh’s case, his latest income filed with IRAS was inadequate and we have not received any documents to help us validate his income. We will be glad to process his application favourably as soon as he is able to submit proof of income earned here or overseas.
  4. MOM processes all applications expeditiously and we are currently in contact with Mr Goh to help him with his application.

Unable to apply for a maid
- The Straits Times, 6 January 2014

I HAVE a 90-year-old mother who is suffering from dementia and I want to bring her back from the nursing home, in order to be with her in her twilight years.

When I tried to apply for a domestic worker to care for my mother, I was told by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) that my salary did not meet the criteria.

I appealed and was told that I needed to submit recent income documents. However, I was unable to do so as I had been in Vietnam and Cambodia on business until recently.

Even though I provided MOM with the relevant documents as proof, I was told that I had to wait until April or so before I could get domestic help.

In the meantime, I am unable to bring my mother home.
