Celebrating Hari Raya Aidilfitri with Our Migrant Workers

  1. To celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri which falls on 24 May 2020, the Inter-agency Task Force (ITF) teamed up with the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) and the Singapore Malay Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SMCCI) to bring festive cheer to our migrant workers.
  2. About 200,000 workers living in purpose-built dormitories (PBDs) were treated to a special lunch menu, such as mutton biryani or chicken chop rice, to celebrate this special occasion.
  3. In addition, the ITF, MUIS and SMCCI surprised workers across 58 locations including PBDs, factory-converted dormitories and construction temporary quarters, with Hari Raya cookies. The cookies were prepared by five central kitchens, with the help of 15 home-based bakers. This initiative was partially funded by donations from the community through the mosques as well as 16 organisations (see Annex A). In addition to bringing some festive cheer, the initiative also helped support our home-based bakers during this period.
  4. With the mosques closed and no Hari Raya congregational prayers due to the circuit breaker measures, Muslim migrant workers prayed on their own in their rooms. The Hari Raya sermon by the Mufti in English was streamed live on SalamSG TV YouTube channel, with Bengali subtitles. Tamil speaking Muslim migrant workers were also able to watch Mufti’s sermon via Indian Muslim mosques’ Facebook pages as well as Tamil internet radio station, Bisme Radio.
  5. The ITF thanks MUIS, SMCCI and other volunteers for partnering with us to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri with our migrant workers. We hope that our efforts will help lift their spirits as they celebrate this festive occasion.
