Written Answer to PQ on Support for Mature Retrenched Workers
NOTICE PAPER NO. 1518 OF 2026 FOR SITTING ON 3 NOVEMBER 2026
QUESTION NO. 3399 FOR ORAL ANSWER
MP: Dr Wan Rizal
To ask the Acting Minister for Manpower in light of the Labour Market Report Second Quarter 2026 showing that workers aged 50 to 59 had the highest retrenchment incidence and a six-month re-entry rate of only 41.9%, whether the Ministry will consider further targeted measures to support this group of mature retrenched workers and jobseekers to preserve their mental resilience and reduce the risk of disengagement.
Answer:
We recognise the challenges faced by employees who undergo retrenchment. To help such workers, the Taskforce for Responsible Retrenchment and Employment Facilitation reaches out to all affected employees to offer career guidance, coaching and training advice tailored to their needs. Career coaches are also trained to provide emotional support where needed, to help workers cope with job loss and navigate the transition back to employment. Eligible involuntarily unemployed workers can also receive temporary financial assistance through the SkillsFuture Jobseeker Support Scheme while they actively search for a job.
2 We also provide additional help for mature and senior jobseekers aged 40 and above who wish to explore career transitions. This includes the Mid-Career Pathways Programme and the Career Conversion Programmes which provides a higher quantum of financial support for mature jobseekers. They can also tap on the SkillsFuture Level-Up Programme to build industry-relevant and emerging skills.
3 We are reviewing how we can provide even stronger support for retrenched workers and jobseekers to help them continue to contribute to the workforce in ways that are aligned with their needs and aspirations. We will announce the details when ready.
