Written Answer to PQ on Employment of Persons with Epilepsy

NOTICE PAPER NO. 1448 OF 2022 FOR THE SITTING ON 21 OCTOBER 2022
QUESTION NO. 2258 FOR WRITTEN ANSWER

MP: Mr Christopher de Souza

To ask the Minister for Manpower whether greater awareness can be created among employers about epilepsy and the various kinds of seizures to reduce a barrier to entry for persons with epilepsy seeking employment.

Answer:

  1. The Tripartite Alliance for Fair and Progressive Employment Practices (TAFEP) has been undertaking educational efforts, including public awareness campaigns, to strengthen understanding and support for the adoption of fair and inclusive employment practices. Persons with certain medical conditions can still perform certain jobs well. Employers should assess the candidates based on merit and their ability to do the job, and not based on their medical conditions.
  2. If workers feel that they have been unfairly treated due to conditions such as epilepsy, they can approach TAFEP for advice and assistance.
