Written Answer by Mr Lim Swee Say Minister for Manpower to Parliamentary Question on Internet-based Job Portals

NOTICE PAPER NO. 1075 OF 2018 FOR THE SITTING ON 19 FEBRUARY 2018

QUESTION NO. 792 FOR WRITTEN ANSWER

MP: Assoc Prof Fatimah Lateef

To ask the Minister for Manpower whether there are checks and balances to ensure that jobs advertised on Internet-based job portals are authentic and accurately described.

Answer

  1. The national Jobs Bank has been designed to reduce the likelihood of having job postings that are inaccurate or advertise for positions that do not exist. Employers have to be Singapore-registered companies and provide their Unique Entity Number (UEN) to post jobs on Jobs Bank for accountability. Similarly, jobseekers apply for jobs only after logging in via SingPass. This creates an environment where jobseekers and employers can search for matches confidently.
  2. Jobs Bank users may also, at the click of a button, report to Workforce Singapore (WSG) regarding Jobs Bank advertisements which contain false information. Upon receiving such cases, WSG will work with the relevant agencies to investigate and where necessary, take action against the company responsible for the job advertisement.
  3. Jobseekers who choose to use other internet-based job portals are advised to select reputable sites where job advertisements are more likely to be authentic and accurately-described. While the Ministry of Manpower does not license Internet-based job portals, the advertising of fake jobs with criminal intent, such as cheating, may be subject to penalties under the Penal Code.
