Written Answer by Mr Lim Swee Say, Minister of Manpower to Parliamentary Question on the proportion of new jobs created

Notice Paper No. 608 Of 2017 For The Sitting On 03 April 2017

Question No. 446 For Written Answer

MP: Mr Leon Perera

To ask the Minister for Manpower what is the proportion of new jobs created in each of the last five years which requires a university degree.

Proposed Answer

  1. The Ministry of Manpower does not collect data on new jobs created by specific qualification requirements, including university degrees. This is because such data may not meaningfully reflect the quality of a job or the responsibilities associated with it.
  2. In line with the Committee on the Future Economy (CFE)’s recommendations, the Ministry encourages companies to adopt progressive HR practices and focus on skills and competencies as the key yardstick in the recruitment and development of workers, beyond academic grades or qualifications.
