Why must sick leave be pro-rated?

Sick leave is pro-rated to ensure that the responsibilities placed on the employer are proportional to the length of service of the employee.

An employee has to serve his employer for at least 3 months to be entitled to paid sick leave or hospitalisation leave. Such leave entitlements are pro-rated based on the service period.

Employers are also encouraged to show compassion and provide paid sick leave to employees with a service period of less than 3 months.
