How do I compute my sick leave entitlement if my first 6 months of employment spans across 2 calendar years, for example across 2024 and 2025?

I started work on 7 August 2024 and am on a 5-day work week. I was on hospitalisation leave during both periods:

  • 8 to 20 December 2024 (10 working days)
  • 8 to 13 January 2025 (4 working days)

Outpatient sick leave and hospitalisation leave are only deducted on working days, excluding off days, rest days, public holidays, and approved leave days.

The table below illustrates how the sick leave is computed.

As at Number of months of service completed Paid outpatient sick leave (days)  Paid hospitalisation leave (days)  Calulation for hospitalisation leave
 7 November 2024

 3

(Paid sick leave entitlement begins)

 5  15  -
 7 December 2024  4  8  30

 30 days - 10 days taken in December 2024

Balance: 20 days

 7 January 2025  5  11  45

 45 days - 10 days taken in December 2024 - 4 days taken in January 2025

Balance: 31 days

 7 February 2025  6  14  60

From 7 February 2025, you would have completed 6 months of service. At this point, your annual entitlement will be reset to 14 days for paid outpatient sick leave and 60 days for paid hospitalisation leave for the new calendar year 2025. All outpatient sick leave and hospitalisation leave taken from 1 January 2025 will be deducted from your entitlement.

After deducting your 4-day hospitalisation leave from 8 to 13 January 2025, the balance is 56 days as at 7 February 2025.

The 60 days of paid hospitalisation leave includes the 14 days of paid outpatient sick leave entitlement.
