As an employer, how do I pay an employee who takes shared parental leave flexibly? When is salary payable?

Employers should continue to pay their employees according to the usual salary payment schedule.

There should be no difference in the salary payment to an employee who takes shared parental leave. The employer is not required to pay above the Government reimbursement cap of $2,500 a week, although the company may voluntarily do so.

An employee’s salary is $2,700 per week.

For the week that the employee takes shared parental leave:

  • The company can claim up to $2,500 from the Government.
  • The company can choose to voluntarily pay the remaining $200 to maintain the employee's full salary.
