Is a visual inspection enough for an asbestos survey?

No, a visual inspection may not be enough to determine whether asbestos is present.Samples must be taken from suspected materials and sent for laboratory testing.Visual inspections can only rule out non-composite materials such as glass, metal or wood.

See list of suspected asbestos-containing materials in Annex A of WSH Guidelines on Management and Removal of asbestos.
