Marie Low
Labour Relations Officer
Labour Relations and Workplaces Department
Being a labour relations officer, Marie evaluates relations between employers and employees as well as dispute cases that were logged with MOM. “It is akin to case management in which I conduct interviews with employees who make certain claims or appeals to find out more about their problems, concerns or doubts,” explains Marie. She then proceeds to explore ways to reconcile the issues between the employers and employees.
In addition to settling disputes between employers and their staff, Marie helps workers to familiarise themselves with the Employment Act. “Because of the nature of my work, one of the challenges I face is helping workers understand their rights and employers to understand their obligations.”
Marie also enjoys meeting people from all walks of life and adapting to different styles to better communicate with them. Through interacting with the different stakeholders, Marie has honed her people management skills and learnt to see things from various angles, including being empathetic and objective at the same time. “Sometimes at conciliation meetings, employees can get emotional and employers may have strong views on a particular issue. The challenge lies in effectively managing the situation and be the rational and objective person onsite.”
Marie shares about MOM’s work culture – one that values and develops people to their fullest potential, and instill a strong sense of belonging. “Having a great workplace enhances your motivation and contributes positively to your overall productivity,” she relates. Marie adds that she is particularly glad that MOM promotes volunteerism. For instance, MOM has a “Meals-on-Wheels” programme where volunteers are gathered to deliver meals to disabled elderly folk. “Such activities are outside of our work scope, but it enables us to bond together,” Marie says.
