Three Proposals to Raise Awareness on Human Trafficking Receive Taskforce Funding

1. The Singapore Inter-Agency Taskforce on Trafficking-in-Persons (TIP) will co-fund three proposals that aim to raise awareness on TIP in Singapore. A total grant of $80,000 will be awarded to the following organisations:
   
   i. EmancipAsia;
   ii. A joint submission from UN Women and Humanitarian Organisation for Migration Economics (HOME); and
   iii. A cross-university group submission from National University of Singapore (NUS) and Singapore Management University (SMU)
2. The TIP Public Awareness Grant was launched in January this year to encourage more organisations and individuals to take a firm stand against TIP and help raise public awareness on this issue. A total of five proposals were received. All submissions were carefully assessed and evaluated based on their own merit, and their ability to help promote and develop anti-TIP efforts in Singapore.
3. Some of the initiatives proposed include a photography exhibition, E-surveys for data collection, and seminars for various stakeholders (refer to Annex for list of programmes). Mr Ng Yeow Boon, one of the Co-chairs for the Taskforce, said “Throughout our interaction with the Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and academic institutions in the past two years, they have consistently shared good ideas with us on how we can improve public awareness on TIP. The Taskforce thus decided to start this grant, to help these groups put their ideas into concrete action. This is also part of our plan to reach out to the larger public. We are very heartened by the response we saw and I look forward to seeing these initiatives come into fruition.”
4. The grant recipients have since been informed of their successful application and accepted the Terms and Conditions laid out by the Taskforce. The Taskforce will be working closely with the recipients to ensure that key deliverables are delivered and will show our utmost support for all the initiatives. We will also continue to collaborate with all stakeholders to further increase public awareness on TIP, as we believe that this would help increase the likelihood of detection and reporting of the crime.

About the Singapore Inter-Agency Taskforce on Trafficking-in-Persons

The Singapore Inter-Agency Taskforce on Trafficking in Persons was established in 2010 in recognition of the threat of Trafficking in Persons (TIP) in Singapore. Co-chaired by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), the Taskforce includes representatives from the Singapore Police Force (SPF), Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA), Ministry of Community Development, Youth & Sports (MCYS), Ministry of Health (MOH), Ministry of Law (MinLaw), Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC). The aim of the Taskforce is to implement holistic, co-ordinated strategies to combat TIP more effectively.
