Media Release on Structure Collapse at Downtown Line Construction

18 July 2012

  1. About 8am this morning, MOM received a call from SCDF about the collapse of a structure at the construction of the Downtown Line Project Site C903 at the junction of Rochor Road and Victoria Street. Our Occupational Safety & Health inspectors went down to the accident site immediately.
  2. MOM has instructed all work to cease onsite, and investigations are currently on-going.
  3. Based on preliminary information gathered, workers were pouring concrete (also known as the casting process) into the formwork when the structure supporting the formwork collapsed. The accident happened more than 12m deep beneath the surface. The formwork, located between the new and old sections of Bugis MRT station, was part of the structure being constructed to form the underground linkway. The project is a Joint Venture between Soletanche-Bachy and Koh Brothers.
  4. The body of one worker was found, and another worker is still unaccounted for. 8 workers were injured and have been sent to hospital.
