Update on MOM's investigation on fire at Pulau Bukom – (Kindly attribute to MOM Spokesperson)

  1. Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Manpower, Mr Hawazi Daipi, visited the scene of the fire at Pulau Bukom today. Mr Hawazi along with the Commissioner for Workplace Safety and Health (WSH), Ho Siong Hin led a team of investigators from Ministry of Manpower (MOM) to the site. On-site, Mr Hawazi was briefed on the progress of MOM's investigation into the incident.
  2. Investigations by MOM's Occupational Safety and Health Inspectorate (OSHI)1 commenced last Friday after the fire at Pulau Bukom was put out.
  3. Preliminary findings from the investigation showed that the fire broke out at a Pump House2 during preparation work for maintenance. Part of the preparation work involved the draining of residual oil in a pipeline and removing it by means of a suction truck. The fire had subsequently spread and escalated into a major fire within the Pump House area.
  4. Investigations by MOM are on-going.

  5. "This is an unfortunate incident and thankfully no lives were lost. MOM has commenced investigations and we will work closely with the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) to uncover the cause of the fire. MOM is also reviewing Shell's safety framework to prevent a recurrence of such an incident. We urge employers and workers to make safety a priority in their workplace. A comprehensive safety framework minimizes risks and ensures every stakeholder is accountable for workplace safety and health". 

1 The Ministry of Manpower's Occupational Safety and Health Inspectorate (OSHI) oversees workplace safety and health investigations after a serious incident/accident has occurred in Singapore. OSHI investigators focus on risk evaluation, management and elimination at workplaces, to ensure measures are taken to prevent accidents.

2 Pump House is an area consisting of pumps and pipelines for distribution of fuels.
