Why must sick leave be pro-rated?

Sick leave is pro-rated to ensure that the responsibilities placed on the employer are proportional to the length of service of the employee.

In accordance with the Employment Act, an employee has to serve his employer for at least 3 months to be entitled to paid sick leave or hospitalisation leave. Such leave entitlements are pro-rated based on the service period.

Employers are also encouraged to show compassion and provide paid sick leave to employees who have worked for less than 3 months.
