WICA compensation and medical expenses limits are updated every 4 years, to keep up with increases in wages and healthcare expenses. Otherwise, the value of WIC compensation would be eroded by inflation.
Similar to past updates in 2008, 2012 and 2016, the 2020 compensation limits for death and PI were based on income growth.
Nominal median gross monthly income of employed residents grew by around 10% from 2013-2017. The 10% increase was applied to the 2016 limits, to get the 2020 limits.
The medical expenses cap of $45,000 was chosen to fully cover more than 95% of public hospitalisation bills for industrial accidents that happened in 2013-2017.
