  3. Residents refer to Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents.
  4. Gross monthly income from work refers to income earned from employment. For employees, it refers to the gross monthly wages or salaries before deduction of employee CPF contributions and personal income tax. It comprises basic wages, overtime pay, commissions, tips, other allowances and one-twelfth of annual bonuses. For self-employed persons, gross monthly income refers to the average monthly profits from their business, trade or profession (i.e. total receipts less business expenses incurred) before deduction of income tax.
  5. Before 2009, full-time refers to employment where the normal hours of work is at least 30 hours a week while part-time refers to employment where the normal hours of work is less than 30 hours a week. From 2009 onwards, the threshold between full-time and part-time was revised from 30 hours to 35 hours to align with the revised definition in the Employment Act.
  6. Data for 2005 are not available as the Comprehensive Labour Force Survey was not conducted due to the conduct of the General Household Survey by Department of Statistics, Ministry of Trade and Industry.
  7. ^ Deflated by Consumer Price Index for all items at 2009 prices (2009 = 100). Figures in brackets are deflated by Consumer Price Index less imputed rentals on owner-occupied accommodation at 2009 prices (2009 = 100).

Comprehensive Labour Force Survey

Coverage

The survey covers private households on the main island of Singapore. It excludes workers living in construction worksites, dormitories and workers' quarters at the workplace and persons commuting from abroad to work in Singapore.

Concepts and Definitions

Gross Monthly Income
Gross monthly income from work refers to income earned from employment. For employees, it refers to the gross monthly wages or salaries before deduction of employee CPF contributions and personal income tax. It comprises basic wages, overtime pay, commissions, tips, other allowances and one-twelfth of annual bonuses. For self-employed persons, gross monthly income refers to the average monthly profits from their business, trade or profession (i.e. total receipts less business expenses incurred) before deduction of income tax.

Median Income
Median income refers to the income level at the middle of the income distribution which divides the bottom half of income earners from the upper half.

Survey on Annual Wage Changes

Coverage

The survey covers private sector establishments (with at least 10 employees). Details are found in Part II on Survey Coverage and Methodology for Survey on Annual Wage Changes.

The data collected from the survey pertain to full-time private sector employees on the CPF scheme who have been with the establishment for at least a year.

Concepts and Definitions

Total Wages
This refers to the sum of basic wages and bonuses. Total wages (including employer CPF contributions) refers to the sum of basic wages, bonuses and estimates of employer CPF contributions.

Basic Wages
This refers to the total basic pay before deductions of the employee CPF contributions and personal income tax. It excludes employer CPF contributions, bonuses, overtime payments, commissions, allowances (e.g. shift, food, housing and transport), other monetary payments and payments-in-kind.

Bonus Quantum (Months of Basic Wage)
Bonus (also known as annual variable component) quantum usually consists of two components i.e. the annual wage supplement (usually paid at year end and commonly known as the 13th month allowance) and the variable bonus.
