The Employment Act

The Employment Act is Singapore's main labour legislation. It specifies:

  • The basic terms and conditions of employment; and
  • The rights and obligations of employers and employees.
  • Who is covered by the Act.

Employment of Children and Young Persons



The provisions of the Act concerning "Rest Day, Hours of Work and Overtime, Annual Leave,  Retrenchment Benefits, Retirement Benefits, Annual Wage Supplement and other variable payment" only covers workmen earning not more than $4,500 basic monthly salary and other employees as defined under the Act who earn not more than $2,000 basic monthly salary.

The provisions concerning "Maternity Leave and Childcare Leave" are provided under both the Children Development Co-Savings Act and the Employment Act.
