MOM and CPF stern in tackling issue
- Berita Harian, 09 January 2010

In the letter "Non-payment of CPF" (Berita Harian, 30 December 2009), Mr Abdul Karim Senin related that his wife’s previous employer had defaulted on her CPF contributions, a month’s salary in November, and also deprived her of childcare leave.

2.   Both MOM and the CPF Board followed up with Mrs Abdul Karim’s queries in November, when she first got in touch with us. By the end of December, Mrs Abdul Karim had received the full salary payment and her two-day childcare leave application was granted by her employer prior to her resignation.  The CPF Board also helped her recover the CPF contributions for August 2009.  A Court hearing has been fixed in January to recover the outstanding CPF contributions due.

3.   Timely salary payments, employer-paid childcare leave and CPF contributions are the basic responsibilities and obligations of an employer under the Employment Act and the CPF Act. Errant employers who breach the Employment and CPF Act will be taken to task.

4.   Under the Employment Act, a first-time offender can face a fine of not more than $5,000 or a jail term not exceeding 6 months or both. First-time CPF defaulters, who are convicted of a late payment offence, may be fined $2,500 for each offence.

5.   Workers with claims and employment issues may approach the Ministry for advice and assistance.  They can also make an e-appointment through the MOM website at www.mom.gov.sg
or contact MOM at 6438 5122.

Non-Payment of CPF
- Berita Harian, 30 December 2009

A BH reader wrote to forum and said that his wife’s employer CPF contribution was delayed for a few months. He understood from a CPF officer that the employer was prepared to pay a fine for the late payment. He and his wife had complained to MOM and the CPFB but have yet to receive from the two agencies.

The writer’s wife added that his wife had to leave the job as a teacher at a private pre-school at Kovan area. She is now working at another pre-school. They also found out that the wife’s previous employer did not register their name in MOE as a pre-school teacher.

The writer said that the wife’s ex-employer told her that they do not provide childcare leave when his wife tried to apply for childcare leave when their six-year-old child was sick. Instead the wife was told to take unpaid leave instead. They have reported the matter to MOM. In the letter, he added that his wife only received the October salary on 15 November 2009 and she has still not received November 2009 salary. He hopes that the authorities will act on his wife's case.
