Health Checks and Specialised Training Course to Enhance Employability and Competency of Crane Operators

  1. From 1 April 2016, crane operators will be required to undergo health checks to enhance their employability. Meanwhile, mini crane operators are required to attend a specialised training course, to be made available in the first quarter of 2016, to enhance their competency.

  2. Enhanced Medical Examination to Improve Employability of Crane Operators

  3. From 1 April 2016, crane operators aged 50 years old and above will be required to undergo health checks while those aged 70 years old and above will be required to undergo additional medical tests.

  4. These checks will improve the employability of crane operators by enabling crane operators to identify early signs of ill health so that steps can be taken to treat and manage the condition. This helps to prevent future health risks and allows crane operators to remain in the profession for a longer time.

  5. In addition, the health of crane operators is also critical to ensure crane safety. As crane operators have direct control over the crane’s movements, any impairment due to medical conditions can affect the ability to perform work safely. As such, the health of crane operators also contributes to a safe working environment for the crane operator and the people around him.

  6. For more information, please refer to Annex A.

  7. Specialised Training Course to Raise Competency of Mini Crane Operators

  8. As part of efforts to raise the competency of mini crane operators, a specialised training course for mini cranes will be made available in the first quarter of 2016. The specialised training will enable them to operate mini cranes in a safe and most efficient manner. With the specialised training, mini crane operators will no longer require a license from the Commissioner for Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) from 1 January 2016. Instead, they will be required to attend the specialised training course for mini cranes recognised by the Commissioner for WSH.

  9. Crane operators who hold a valid mobile or crawler crane licence can continue to operate mini cranes while aspiring mini crane operators can attend the specialised training course.
